R&D Materials Engineer (CPS) [China]


 

Position Overview:

The Materials Engineer (CPS) is expected to satisfy the specific needs from plants and customers; assess viability of Aluminum sheet related technology, process or method within technical discipline to find root cause and solutions for the issues in the manufacturing and application.

The jobholder will use creativity, innovation and knowledge of multiple technical disciplines and processes to solve complex problems that may affect multiple sites. S/he will propose, justify and lead moderately complex projects; integrate knowledge of a variety of disciplines to independently address more complex problems; isolate a problem and draw upon knowledge and experience to design appropriate possible solutions.

Principle Accountabilities

Technical Expertise

  • Demonstrates specialized knowledge of scientific or engineering principles, theories and concepts in a narrow technical discipline to analyze problems, devise hypotheses, and determine approach for conducting analyses
  • Possesses broad knowledge of other technical disciplines; Integrates knowledge of a variety of disciplines to independently address problems in more complex process areas
  • Perform sophisticated analysis of complex data and make product or process recommendations based on analysis
  • Ability to assess viability of a technology, process or method to make recommendations as to the best application for a site based on business needs
  • Develops broad knowledge of other engineering or scientific disciplines
  • Takes responsibility for work within established objectives.
  • File invention records, cited in IP filings, recognizing opportunities for IP


Project Leadership

  • Demonstrates proficiency in project management tools/principles or competently leads projects of moderate complexity
  • Proposes, justifies and leads complex projects for a site or complex segments of larger projects impacting multiple sites/region/global
  • Will ensure speedy and effective action to progress site or regional project objectives through interactions with equipment manufacturers and third-party companies who may be Novelis suppliers or customers
  • Balancing multiple priorities across multiple projects or service group requests
  • Responsible for setting priorities of project team; as well as balancing multiple priorities across multiple projects or service group requests


Communication

  • Frequently communicates scientific and technical information or results effectively to colleagues, external suppliers and customers that influences program decision-making
  • Participates in gathering of customer (internal or external) requirements and feedback; incorporates requirements and feedback to project actions.
  • Effectively presents technical information to peers or superiors in the scientific community; persuasion of others to trial new ideas in operations.
  • Publishes research results in scientific journals; lead, discuss and review research results submitted by junior staff
  • May present information at technical conferences
  • Identifies and communicates best practices and methods to others
  • Has the ability to effectively operate in multiple geographies and cultures


EHS

  • Utilizes equipment in a safe operating manner and in compliance with Novelis safety standards
  • SME for EHS concerns related to a specific process(es), laboratory(ies), or functional area(s) so as to ensure consideration of EHS in design/adoption of techniques and equipment
  • May be accountable for ensuring appropriate EHS and housekeeping practices for an assigned area at a site
  • May be responsible for ensuring that other employees in an assigned area or project team utilize equipment in a safe operating manner and utilize safe practices to comply with Novelis safety standards

  • May influence product or process decisions that impact operations
  • Addresses complex problems by demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of a work area’s technology

Qualifications

Education

  • Advanced degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Corrosion Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a directly related field


Experience

  • Entry to this level typically requires 3 years of relevant experience
  • Project Management experience with multiple projects
  • High level of creativity and self-initiative
  • Profound expertise in the field of metallurgy, especially Al alloys development


Functional Competencies

  • Knowledge of Al Physical metallurgy
  • Profound experience of materials characterization techniques (SEM, EBSD, EDS.)
  • Good communication skills and advanced English language
