Lead Disability Specialist


 

Working in the Center for Accessible Education (CAE), the Lead Disability Specialist serves as a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas related to services and accommodations for graduate and professional students. Major responsibilities include: Assess Verification of Disability forms, medical documentation, and psychological/psychoeducational evaluations to verify disability according to University, State, and Federal guidelines in order to determine appropriate accommodations and support. Interpret and assess whether determined accommodations conflict with or violate technical and academic standards set by the Division of Graduate Education, appropriate professional school, or accreditation agency. Provides information to graduate and professional UCLA students who suspect that they may have a disability and make referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources; provides specialized disability-related counseling for graduate and professional students; liaison with on-campus and off-campus departments and programs to coordinate services and to explain services for graduate and professional students served by CAE; leads and/or co-facilitates support groups and instruct small group workshops in disability management and advocacy; provides disability awareness presentations for campus faculty, staff and students in graduate and professional academic programs. Prepares written program materials, and assists, when necessary, in other CAE services and functions.

Required/Preferred

1. Advanced Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

2. Professional experience in post-secondary settings with students who have disabilities, and working knowledge of support services and accommodation methods.

3. Professional experience in post-secondary settings with graduate students or professional school students, and working knowledge of policies, procedures, and technical standards present in graduate and professional programs.

Preferred

4. Advanced working knowledge of a variety of assessment instruments and psycho-educational reports used to diagnose specific learning disabilities in adults (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Test, Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement, Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities, Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, etc.), and demonstrated ability to interpret test results and psycho-educational reports to determine eligibility for services.

Preferred

5. Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and Assembly Bill 746.

6. Working knowledge of UC Guidelines and Practices, and University Policy as they pertain to disabled students.

7. Knowledge and ability to provide counseling on disability management and compensatory strategies for disabled students.

8. Ability to organize and teach workshops and support groups to assist disabled students to develop personal understanding about disability-related issues.

9. Working knowledge of adaptive computer technology and specialized software.

10. Ability to work collaboratively with individuals, departments and organizations on and off campus.

11. Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing to obtain and convey information, particularly with faculty and other academic personnel.
